Updating a Kitchen For Under $10,000
We sometimes get requests from clients to help them renovate their kitchen without doing a full gut. To keep costs down, they often ask what can be done to reuse some of the existing elements and work within the existing footprint. We recently finished up a couple kitchen facelifts that meets this criteria, so we wanted to share this process with you!
One of the most common requests we get is to help clients make their kitchen, or their home, brighter and less brown. If your kitchen is functional and has a good layout, you can achieve a similar result to this without changing the layout or getting new cabinetry. The biggest expense for a kitchen renovation is always the cabinetry. By painting your existing cabinets, you can cut your renovation costs in half! But keep in mind that brand new custom cabinets have a ton of add-on features that you wouldn’t get by repainting your existing ones (custom cabinetry is amazing and we don’t want to downplay that!).
The first kitchen below had newer cabinets in a nice style, but their home felt dark and very brown. Very, very brown. With these clients, we helped them brighten up their main living areas- the kitchen, living room, entryway, and dining nook. They also had hardwood floors, which are a great feature as well as a big expense, so we worked with their existing floors and lightened up the rest of the finishes.

We hired a company to professionally spray their cabinets, and chose a light blue-grey colour for the island to give it a custom feel and elevate the design. Repainting the cabinets made a huge difference! To update this kitchen even more, we selected a new backsplash and countertops, new pendant lighting, faucet, sink, and cabinet hardware. We also added new bar stools and some gorgeous accessories to finish off the design!

Traditional DIY Kitchen
Another example of a kitchen facelift like this is the kitchen below, where we selected new backsplash tile, cabinet paint colours & door style, countertops, and hardware. We also selected wallpaper and a fabric for custom roman shades. We were careful to work with the existing style of the home so it all flowed together. They wanted to keep a traditional feel, but in a fresh updated style. The creamy walls with soft accents of blue and red gave a welcoming and subtle traditional feel.
This project is a great example of our DIY Design Packages. We provided the client with all of the selections and suppliers, and they then executed the design themselves by ordering products, arranging installation, and supervising installation, and troubleshooting any issues that may come up along the way. This is a great way to save some money if that is a concern for you. But if you don’t have the time to take care of those things on your own, our Full Service Design Packages are the way to go!
This kitchen had a great layout that worked, so it wasn’t necessary to do all new cabinetry. We were able to keep the existing footprint and just update the cabinet doors.
You can’t see it in these photos, but there is an 18’ floor-to-ceiling wall of this gorgeous floral wallpaper on the opposite side of the kitchen. Adding wallpaper is another great way to "renovate" a space without a big construction project. Wallpaper adds a ton of character and dimension to a space. It really amps up the design and gives it a custom look.
Overall, we were able to provide both of these clients with a beautiful design that met their needs and didn’t break the bank!
