Carriage House: A Craftsman-Inspired New Build Designed Around the People Living in It
There is something special about walking into a home that immediately feels personal.
Not overly styled. Not trend-driven. Not designed to look like everyone else’s.
Just warm, layered, thoughtful, and deeply reflective of the people living there. That was the vision behind Carriage House, a craftsman-inspired new build and recent collaboration between Marianne Elizabeth Design, Birchstone Homes, and Scala Designs.
From the beginning, this project was never about creating a home around one particular “design look.” Instead, the goal was to create a space that felt authentic to the homeowners themselves. Their existing furniture, collected pieces, artwork, and personal style became the foundation for many of the design decisions throughout the home.
Designing Around the Client, Not Just the Trends
One of the most meaningful aspects of this project was incorporating pieces the clients already loved into the overall design of the home.
Too often, new builds can feel disconnected from the people living inside them. Everything is brand new, perfectly matched, and sometimes missing the warmth that makes a home feel personal.
For Carriage House, the design began with the homeowners themselves. The layered bookshelves, collected furnishings, vintage-inspired details, soft textures, and meaningful decor.
A home should not feel like a showroom. It should feel like your life.
Bringing Warmth and Character Into a New Build
One of the biggest opportunities in custom home design is finding ways to create warmth and personality from the beginning.
In Carriage House, architectural millwork plays a major role in giving the new build a sense of permanence. Walnut built-ins, integrated shelving, layered textures, and carefully selected materials help the home feel established from the start.
The kitchen is a perfect example of this balance.
Soft muted cabinetry paired with rich wood tones creates warmth without heaviness. Open shelving and integrated storage bring texture and personality while still feeling highly functional. Even within an open-concept layout, the home maintains a sense of intimacy and definition through thoughtful architectural details.
The goal was never to create a space that felt overly formal or untouchable. Instead, we wanted the home to feel elegant, comfortable, and genuinely welcoming.
The Value of Collaboration
Carriage House also reflects the strength of a well-aligned project team.
With the builder, architectural team, designer, and homeowners working toward the same goal, the home was able to come together with a clear sense of direction from the beginning. That kind of collaboration matters because it shapes more than individual details. It shapes how the whole home feels.
A Home With Soul
What makes Carriage House memorable is not simply that it is beautiful. It is that it feels personal.
And ultimately, that is always our goal.
