NEW BUILD, OLD SOUL: INSIDE THE CARRIAGE HOUSE
Mint green kitchen with walnut island bookshelf in an Airdrie new build
A brand-new house is exciting. It's also a little blank. Fresh drywall, builder-grade finishes and empty rooms can make even the most beautiful floor plan feel like it belongs to someone else.
The Carriage House is a new build interior design project in the Airdrie and Calgary area, and it started with one question: how do we make a house that was just built feel like it's been loved for years?
Our answer was to design around the things that already mattered to our clients: their antique furniture, their shelves of vintage books and the framed art they'd gathered over a lifetime.
Designing Around How You Actually Live
Walnut hallway built-in storage
Good design in a new build begins long before paint colours. It starts with how you move through your day. Where do the books go? Where does the morning coffee happen? Where do you land at the end of the day?
At The Carriage House, those answers shaped the millwork. A walnut built-in lines the hallway, so everyday storage becomes something you want to look at. In the living room, a brick and walnut fireplace sits beside a custom walnut bookcase, made to hold a collection that had been waiting for a proper home.
When you plan these pieces during the build instead of after move-in, they feel like part of the house, because they are.
A Kitchen with Character
The kitchen is where the home's personality shows first. We chose a soft mint-green palette and paired it with a walnut island with built-in bookshelves, a warm, lived-in touch in the room that's usually the most practical.
It's still a hard-working kitchen. It just doesn't feel like a showroom. It feels like theirs.
Your Pieces, Given a New Home
A lot of homeowners think a new build means starting over and leaving the old furniture behind. We think the opposite. The pieces you already love are what give a new house its soul.

In The Carriage House:
- The stairwell became a gallery wall, so the clients' framed art greets them every time they go up or down.
- A quiet reading corner was built around an antique barrister bookcase.
- In the blush-toned primary bedroom, a four-poster bed sets a romantic, collected mood.
- A stone-tiled bathroom adds texture that feels timeless, not trendy.

Each room mixes new with old: crisp new millwork next to heirloom furniture, fresh finishes around well-worn books. That layering is what makes a home feel personal.

Why Bring in an Interior Designer During Your Build?
If you're building in Airdrie or Calgary, the best time to bring in a designer is before the finishes are locked in. Here's why:
- Built-ins get planned, not squeezed in. Millwork, lighting and outlets can all be placed where your furniture and collections will actually live.
- Your existing pieces get a plan. We look at what you own and design the rooms to showcase it.
- Decisions get easier. A new build brings hundreds of choices. A clear design direction keeps them all working together.
- The result feels cohesive. Every room connects, so the house reads as one home, not a series of builder packages.
At Marianne Elizabeth Design, we believe process protects creativity. It does not limit it. A steady, organized approach is what leaves room for the details that make a home special.
A New Home That Feels Like Yours
The Carriage House is proof that "new" and "full of character" can live under the same roof. With thoughtful planning, warm materials and a lot of respect for the things our clients already loved, a brand-new build became a home with soul: layered, personal and beautifully their own.
“We hired Marianne to design the interior of a carriage house we built for my mother on our property in south Calgary, and she was excellent to work with. She took the time to understand my mom's style, worked with furniture and pieces she already owned, and gave great guidance on where to invest and where to save. She also connected us with our builder, truly an incredible connection and central to the team on our project. The space looks beautiful, my mom is happily settled in, and we'd hire Marianne again without hesitation. Highly recommend.” - Carriage House Client
